Working with the Media

There are a number of different ways that individuals and organisations involved in mental health can work with the media. Broadly speaking, these can be grouped into working proactively and working in a responsive manner.

Any work with the media provides an opportunity to support sensitive, accurate and appropriate reporting of suicide and mental illness through the implementation of the Mindframe principles.

All approaches to working with the media are optimised by taking time to develop a strategy. The first step is to consider what capacity you or your organisation has to work with the media.

This section of the website provides some suggestions for planning media work about suicide and mental illness. It incorporates suggestions for developing media plans and policies, making and sustaining contact with media professionals, generating stories, responding to media requests and finally responding to media reporting. There is additional information outlining some key tools and activities, such as developing media releases and organising and conducting interviews.
